Leaving Switzerland ends the basic-insurance obligation. The cancellation then follows a particular logic, outside the 30 November deadline.

End of the insurance obligation on departure

Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) is compulsory for people domiciled in Switzerland. When you transfer your domicile abroad, this obligation ends on the date of your actual departure, confirmed by the deregistration with your municipality's residents' registration office.

The cancellation is therefore not subject to the ordinary 30 November deadline: it takes effect on the date of departure, on presentation of the supporting document. You do not have to wait until the end of the year.

The documents to provide

Enclose with your letter the municipality's departure certificate (deregistration with the residents' registration office) stating the date and country of destination. This is the document that triggers the cancellation on the correct date. Without it, the insurer maintains cover and billing.

Cross-border workers and special statuses

A permanent departure differs from cross-border-worker status or a temporary stay. If you keep an activity or a domicile in Switzerland, specific rules apply. If in doubt, check your situation before cancelling.

The procedure to follow

Report your departure to the municipality, obtain the certificate, then send your cancellation to your insurer's cancellation address, stating the date of departure and enclosing the supporting document. Keep a copy and the proof of dispatch.
