Cancel your health insurance as a cross-border worker

Becoming a cross-border worker or leaving Switzerland changes your insurance obligation.

Cross-border workers: the right of option

Anyone who works in Switzerland and lives in a neighbouring country is in principle subject to Swiss insurance, but may exercise a right of option: under certain conditions, choose between the Swiss system (KVG/LAMal) and the country of residence.

Leaving Switzerland

A permanent departure ends the KVG/LAMal obligation on the date of official deregistration — not on 31 December. The insurer requires proof (deregistration certificate, new domicile).

Frequently asked questions
