Mistake no. 1: sending too late
This is the most frequent reason for refusal. For basic insurance, your letter must be received by 30 November at the latest — not posted on that date. A letter sent on 29 November but received on 2 December is out of time. The postmark does not count: only receipt matters. Allow several days and prefer registered mail, which time-stamps receipt.
Mistake no. 2: the wrong address or an incomplete document
Many insured people send their cancellation to the general contact address when the fund requires a separate cancellation address. Check it before sending. On content, a missing insured number, signature or relevant branch (basic KVG/LAMal or supplementary VVG/LCA) is enough to delay — or reject — the request.
Always state: surname, first name, address, insured number, branch, desired effective date and signature. Make clear that you are cancelling, not merely 'switching'.
Mistake no. 3: no proof, or unpaid premiums
A plain email proves neither the signature nor the date of receipt: in a dispute, you have no recourse. Registered mail or an acknowledgement of receipt from the client portal removes that doubt. Always keep a copy of the letter and the proof of sending.
Another little-known trap: a cancellation is blocked while premiums or cost-sharing remain unpaid. Settle your arrears before starting the process, otherwise the fund can legitimately refuse your departure.
Mistake no. 4: cancelling the old fund too early
Never cancel before you have the written confirmation of membership from your new fund as of 1 January. The right sequence is: compare, sign the new one, then cancel the old one. That way you avoid any coverage gap — basic insurance being compulsory in Switzerland.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my cancellation refused?
Most often because the letter was received after 30 November, the document was incomplete (missing insured number or signature), the address was wrong, or premiums were unpaid.
Does the postmark count?
No. For basic insurance, what counts is the date the fund receives it. Registered mail is the safest way to prove it.
What if my fund wrongly refuses my cancellation?
Ask for a written, reasoned decision, check the deadline and form, and keep your proof of sending. A compliant cancellation received in time cannot be refused for basic insurance.
