Why comparing pays off for young adults

From age 19 you move from the 'child' rate to the 'young adult' one: the premium rises sharply. Yet basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) is identical at every insurer — benefits are set by law. For the same cover, the premium gap between funds can be large. Comparing and then cancelling means keeping exactly the same protection while paying less.

Many young people stay out of habit with the fund their parents chose. But nothing forces you to: switching basic insurance is a right, with no health questionnaire and no reservations allowed.

The deadline and the steps

The rule is the same for everyone: your cancellation letter must reach your fund by 30 November at the latest, for the contract to end on 31 December and take effect on 1 January. What counts is the date of receipt, not the postmark. Send by registered mail and allow a few days.

Sign with the new fund before cancelling the old one

First choose your new insurer and obtain its confirmation of membership from 1 January, then cancel the old one. That way you are never without cover. Note: a cancellation is blocked if premiums remain unpaid — settle your accounts first.

Savings levers specific to young people

Beyond switching funds, two settings lower the premium. The deductible first: a healthy young adult can opt for a higher deductible (up to 2,500 francs) in exchange for a lower monthly premium. The insurance model next: family doctor, HMO, Telmed or pharmacy (PharMed) cost less than the standard model with free choice of doctor.

Also think about the premium subsidy (premium reduction): depending on your income and canton, you may be entitled to it, especially as a student or in training. Check with your canton.

Frequently asked questions

From what age does the young-adult rate apply?

The young-adult rate generally applies from 19 to 25, after the child rate. That is often when comparing pays off the most.

Can I cancel without my parents' consent?

Yes. From the age of majority you manage your own basic insurance contract and can cancel it yourself, respecting the 30 November deadline.

Is a high deductible a good choice when young?

If you are healthy and rarely see a doctor, a higher deductible reduces the premium. With frequent care, a low deductible may be more advantageous: do the maths.
